(Note: For degree programs, the minimum grade required for promotion is an average of C+ (65%) in subjects in the main field of study, and a C (60%) in all other subjects.)
Where appropriate the grade assigned may be converted to numeric form for calculation of the grade point average as follows: A+, 4; A, 4; B+, 3.5; B, 3; C+, 2.5; C, 2; D, 1; F, 0; DNA, 0. Other grades are not included in GPA calculation.
The President's Honour List recognizes consistently outstanding achievement by students.
President's Honour List standing is granted to students completing the normal number of subjects of a semester program, achieving all A or A+ grades and obtaining a grade point average of 4.0.
President's Honour List standing may be granted to Continuing Education students who have consistently maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout a one-year period, provided that the student has been registered in a minimum of four subjects from any FCE certificate or diploma program during that period.
Reduced load students, and those enrolled in non post-secondary level subjects (i.e. remedial, or non credit subjects) do not qualify for the President's Honour List. However, students who have an accommodation as approved by Counselling, Disability and Health Services should contact their Chair or Dean to discuss eligibility.
Unless it pertains to an “extra subject” for the semester, any of the following grades will normally disqualify a student for purposes of the President’s Honour List: ADV; DNC; AEG; DEF; INC; SUP; UNSAT; WD; EXM.
If the student does not officially withdraw, but could not write the examination or complete a portion of the term work due to illness or any other equally compelling reason, he/she may be accorded Aegrotat Standing (AEG). Where AEG is awarded, it represents the minimum pass for graduation purposes. A student who is awarded Aegrotat Standing may request permission to write a deferred examination. If such a student achieves a grade higher than the minimum, this will be the grade credited for the subject.
A Promotion Committee may recommend "Supplemental Privilege" (for Full-Time Students - in not more than 2 subjects in a 5 subject semester) for a student who has failed to meet the minimum requirements for a subject. The privilege entitles the student, on payment of a fee, to write an examination in that subject or to complete other prescribed work as directed by the Promotion Committee.
No grade higher than a minimum pass for graduation purposes may be attained through removal of a supplemental condition.
A deferred examination privilege may be granted for circumstances arising on compassionate grounds; e.g., death in a family, illness, or other circumstances beyond the student's control.
Documentation of the extenuating circumstances must be provided by the student.
The responsibility to grant deferred examinations rests with the Chair or designate. Notification to the Promotion Committee will be provided.
The student's grade will be determined in the same manner as if the student had written the final examination. The normal supplemental examination fee will be waived for deferred examinations.
With the approval of the Promotion Committee a student may be given the grade "INC" (Incomplete). In this case the student will receive a letter indicating work yet to be completed and the date by which it must be submitted to satisfy the subject requirements. The notation "INC" will be changed to "F" if the assigned work is not completed by the designated date.
On the recommendation of the Promotion Committee, grades such as DNA, F, ***, ATT or "D" (non-credit) may be transferred from the upper portion of the transcript to the Non-Applicable Credits section.
Similarly, subjects not germane to the program in which the student is currently registered, may be transferred to the Non-Applicable Credits section upon recommendation of the Promotion Committee.
No student will be eligible to graduate with a Seneca College certificate or diploma if, in more than 30% of the subjects required for graduation, the student has received a "D" grade.
Students who are not successful in two or more semester subjects during a regular day semester may be required, on the recommendation of a Promotion Committee, to withdraw from full-time and/or part-time studies for at least one semester. Part-time or partial load students will be assessed in terms of minimum acceptable performance relative to the number of subjects carried.
For degree programs, the minimum requirement for graduation is an average of C+ (2.5) in subjects in the main field of study, and an average of C (2.0) in all other subjects.
Distance learning is a term used to describe learning via a number of potential modes including correspondence, online and mixed mode. Where the majority of a subject is delivered at a distance, a proctored, in person, final examination of no less than 30% will normally be a required element of the modes of evaluation.
