Education: SENECA COLLEGE

Seneca renews focus on producing well-rounded civil engineering technologists.

By Susan Maclean

In a world where civil engineering seems to be attracting few newcomers and some colleges have closed their programs, the faculty and management at Seneca College of Applied Arts & Technology in Toronto, ON are determined that their civil engineering technician and technology diploma programs thrive.

Bill Humber, chair of the program, sees a definite need for civil engineering skills given the need for retrofitting sooner or later the majority of structures. "There's a significant amount of either new, upgrading or replacement infrastructure that is going to be required, including massive tunnel and bridge projects. We're now experiencing a boom in retrofitting the built environment and there are a significant number of new jobs in the area of construction and land development."

Information technology has changed this field radically in the past 10 years, says Humber.

"Where tasks were separated and performed by people over a period of several weeks, now they integrate tasks and do them in a much shorter period of time with the CAD programs we work with in our program."

He notes that while they have always had a strong IT focus, they have now further retooled their program to reflect IT's transformation of the civil engineering discipline. "We've recognized that some of the land development packages available give us an opportunity to provide an integrated approach so the students see a relationship between the variety of elements that make up civil engineering.
