| 1. When can I start first semester ? |
| Either in September or January, however a January start requires that you complete semester 2 in the summer to get onto the regular academic cycle. |
| 2. Should I register in the two-year Civil Technician (CVL) or 3-year Civil Technology (CVT) program? |
| Since the first year (semesters 1 and 2) is common to both, you can make your selection at the end of semester 2. |
| 3. Is Co-op placement available? |
| Co-op is available in both the CVL and CVT programs. Co-op is optional and subject to academic eligibility requirements and an additional fee. For information contact the Cooperative Education Coordinator, Ian MacLeod at (416) 491-5050, ext. 2361 or at Ian.MacLeod@senecac.on.ca |
| 4. What are the job prospects upon graduation? |
| The job prospects for Civil Engineering Technicians and Technologists have been excellent and this trend is expected to continue given the level of economic activity in both new construction and the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure. |
| 5. Will I work in an office setting or outdoors? |
| Given the diverse careers in the Civil Engineering field, opportunities exist for employment in either setting or a combination of the two, ranging from field surveying, materials testing, site supervision, inspection, office engineering drawing and design, plan examination and approvals, etc. |
| 6. Can I specialize in a particular area within the program? |
| The CVT program offers two electives for further specialization (beginning in year 2). Successful students may choose either the BUILDING elective which emphasizes building design and construction, or the MUNICIPAL/ENVIRONMENTAL elective which stresses design and construction related to roads, water supply and waste treatment with a practical environmental focus. |
|
7. Are there university transfer options upon graduation?
|
|
There are 2 opportunities of note for 3-year Civil Engineering Technology graduates.
1. Lakehead University (Thunder Bay): Earn a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) degree upon completion of a summer transition program and the 3rd and 4th years of the Lakehead program.
2. York University (Toronto): Obtain a 4-year degree in Environmental Studies (specializing in Urban Sustainability) following completion of the last 2 years of the York program.

|
8. Can I be certified upon graduation?
|
|
OACETT (The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists) recognizes both Civil programs as meeting all academic requirements for certification. With completion of the necessary work experience and a professional practice exam, a 2-year graduate can become a Certified Technician (C. Tech.) and a 3-year graduate (with submission of a technical report) a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET).
|
| 9. What does it cost to take this program? |
| The current tuition fees are approximately $1360 per semester. Textbooks typically range from $150 to $300 per semester and co-op (optional) is $400 per work term. |
