Business Administration - Retail Management

Program Code: BARCampus: Newnham, Markham
Duration: 6 Semesters (3 Years)Start Dates: Summer, Fall, Winter
Start dates are subject to change
Credential Awarded: Ontario College Advanced Diploma

Program Description

A career in retail management demands a specific set of skills and competencies, from balancing receipts to buying and managing merchandise. With Canadian retail sales on the rise in many sectors, the skills and industry knowledge you’ll gain in the Business Administration - Retail Management program will position you for success in this competitive environment.

At the School of Business Management (SBM), you’ll spend the first four semesters building a practical grounding in contemporary management theory. These four semesters are common to all SBM programs.

In your final two semesters the focus shifts to building retail-specific skills, including buying, merchandise and supply chain management and customer service. Your learning is complemented by an in-depth exploration of current retail strategy, store operation, finance and technology.

The program curriculum offers innovative approaches to learning outside of the classroom, including seminars, value added presentations, case analyses, online business simulations, and external consulting projects.

  • Grade 12 English: ENG4(C) or ENG4(U)
  • Grade 12 Mathematics: (C) or (U) or Grade 11 Mathematics (U) or (M)

The Importance of Learning Skills:

Student success in college requires well developed learning skills (such as being able to work independently, participate in a team, be well-organized, develop good work habits, and show initiative). These skills are as important as prior academic achievement. While it is expected that applicants would have developed these skills through previous education and life experiences, Seneca offers support to assist students with further development of these important skills.

Your Career

The retail sector is growing quickly and it’s going to need people like you: bright, capable managers with a solid retail foundation. You can build this foundation with the Business Administration - Retail Management Program. Graduate and open the door to a variety of retail companies, working in entrepreneurship operations and franchise management.

Upon graduation from the Business Administration – Retail Management program you will have met all the requirements for the C.I.M. designation once you have completed two years of managerial work experience and made appropriate application to the Canadian Institute of Management.

Canadian Professional Sales Association (CPSA)

Upon graduation you will have completed all require-ments and can make application to CPSA to receive a Certificate of Professional Sales from the Canadian Professional Sales Association. You will also have met all the educational requirements for the CPSA’s professional designation - Certified Sales Professional CSP.

Retail Council of Canada (RCC)

As a graduate of the Retail Management diploma program, you will be prepared to write Retail Council of Canada’s (RCC) Certified First Level Manager (CFLM) exam and receive RCC’s Certificate of Completion. Educational Pathways

The first four semesters are offered at both Newnham and Markham Campuses. The fifth and sixth semesters of these programs are offered at Newnham Campus only.

Further flexibility is provided through pathways to other programs in the Faculty of Business. The School of Business Management has a substantially common first-year curriculum with the Schools of Marketing and e-Business, International Business, Accounting and Financial Services, and the Centre for Human Resources. Therefore, students can transfer to programs in these other schools with credits already earned for the first year.

Testimonial

“As a growing organization, we’re always looking for people with the right retail skills. It’s not only important for us to hire people who love music; we want people who love retail. Those who go to school to learn it clearly demonstrate the dedication we want in our stores. We expect students graduating from Seneca’s Retail Management program will be on the right track.”
